Livestock Feed

Alfalfa has been used for animal feed for several eras.  We’ve seen the results and know it works.  None the less, we feel it’s best to constantly have more research to determine benefits in non-traditional livestock species, ideal feeding rates and much more!

Dehydrated alfalfa for swine. Research conducted by P.A. Thacker, Department of Animal & Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan.  February 22, 2007.

Conducted on the basis of dertermining the nutrient digestibility, performance and carcass traits of growing-finishing pigs fed diets containing graded levels of dehydrated alfalfa meal.   The dehydrated alfalfa meal was obtained from Western Alfalfa Milling in Norquay, Saskatchewan.  The experimental diets contained 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5 or 30% alfalfa in addition to the base diet of barley and soybean meal.

  • It was concluded that alfalfa meal can be included in grower diets up to 7.5% without any detrimental effects on performance.
  • During the finishing period there was improvement in weight gain and feed intake at inclusion rates of 7.5 and 15%.
  • Finisher pigs fed levels up to 22.5% of alfalfa meal showed an improvement in carcass traits including an increase in lean yield and a reduction in loin fat.
  • In summary, to maximize pig performance during the grower period, alfalfa can be fed up to levels of 7.5% of the diet.  During the finishing period alfalfa can be fed up to levels of 15% of the diet without any detrimental effects on pig performance.
