Alfalfa Green for use in Land Reclamation and Soil Remediation Projects :

Alfalfa Green soil Nutrition is a single ingredient, 100% plant-based soil conditioner, soil amendment, anti-compaction agent, and broad based fertilizer which adds over 30 nutrients to balance the soil. Alfalfa Green is one product you can use for all your reclamation projects: Salinty uptake, re-establishent of vegetation, and prevention of soil erosion.

In addition to the traditional macronutrients N-P-K, Alfalfa Green contains a host of micronutrients, not found in most fertilizer products. It also contains natural moisture-retaining fibre found in the organic component of the pellet. Alfalfa Green absorbs up to four times its weight in water which contributes to drought resistance. With a neutral pH of 6.0-6.2, Alfalfa Green neutralizes acidic soil and buffers alkaline soil, creating a favourable environment for the development of micro-organisms, resulting in a healthy, sustainable, living, active soil.

Alfalfa Green builds a healthy root system by improving soil structure :

As the structure of a soil in made more granular and crumbly by decomposing organic matter, the soil absorbs moisture that would otherwise run off, causing erosion and a loss of nutrients in the process. Good soil structure provides channels through which water and air can filter to greater depths. When rain comes after a dry spell, soil that is hard on the surface is more likely to have rapid runoff and erosion than one that is loose and crumbly.

Organic matter in the soil also ensures a continuous food source for soil organisms.  As the organisms consume the organic materials they help to maintain good soil structure, making the soil a more favourable place for root development.  The decomposition process improves the soil structure by developing compounds that cement small soil particles together into aggregates, allowing for both increased drainage and moisture retention.  Decomposition also changes the organic matter into inorganic nutrients that can by used by growing plants.

Reclamation Customers

Our pellets have been used in the reclamation sector in a variety of situations.  Below is a comparison of two oil well leases in Southern Saskatchewan.  Both were seeded with a native grass mix at the same time, however the one on the right had Alfalfa Green applied while the one on the left did not.  These pictures are taken two years after seeding and demonstrate a significant improvement in vegetative cover in the site treated with AG.  The site treated with AG has a good establishment of the native grasses, while the site to the left, without AG has become dominated by leafy spurge and shows poor grass re-establishment.

Alfalfa Green was also used on a closed pit at a coil mine in Southern Saskatchewan.  Here it was applied at rates of 0.75 to 4 mt/ac but was never re-seeded.  The areas treated with AG have re-vegetated, while the areas without are still barren.  As well, the soil structure appeas to be better where AG was used.

Alfalfa Green can also be used on areas where soil sterilant has destroyed soil microbial populations resulting in bare spots and nutrient deficiencies.  AG gradually builds up microbe populations, helping in the successful re-seeding of the area.  The picture below shows the re-vegetative growth aided by AG in a field damaged by sterilant leaching.
